Position Measurement
Laser Measurement Sensors Are Used to Monitor Position
Laser sensors are often used to monitor position, control, and alignment of objects and targets. Laser distance sensors (triangulation) are typically used for precise position monitoring and are commonly integrated in OEM machine positioning or factory automation applications. Long distance rangefinders are used in long distance positioning applications such as crane positioning, overhead crane positioning in steel mills, vehicle detection and monitoring, ship docking applications, and process positioning applications in steel and roller plants.
View below our many different applications in which Acuity laser sensors have been used to measure and monitor the position of targets. This application list is not intended to be exhaustive. For OEM companies, contact Acuity for your custom position measurement application.
Aircraft Engine Hoisting
Acuity laser rangefinders have been installed and used for the precise positioning of cranes during the aircraft engine hoisting process.
Bridge Cranes
Monitoring the position of trollies and hoists on bridge cranes in busy seaports requires accurate distance measurements afforded by our laser distance sensors.
Crane Positioning
Cranes can be automated and monitored using long distance laser rangefinders, helping to improve crash avoidance, automated retrieval, and maintain equipment efficiency.
Crane Rail Thickness Custom Application
Crane rail thickness solution uses both short range and long range laser sensors, and reduces measurement of wear-and-tear on rail flanges from 3 months to 1 night.
Elevator Position Measurement
Rangefinders are used in elevator positioning applications ranging from indoor elevator position measurement to outdoor position tracking of metallic elevators.
High Speed Train Pantograph Inspection
In order to prevent any problems with the pantograph and to enhance the operation of the train system, the use of a laser distance sensor is ideal for pantograph inspections.
Laser Positioning Video Demo
In this video demo of laser positioning, we show how to set up two AR1000 laser distance sensors on two opposite targets.
Long-Term Bridge Testing. Position of Pilings
Rangefinders can monitor freeway bridge piling positioning, including the structural position movement of pilings over time as well as other structural monitoring.
Loop Control Position Measurement
Laser sensors are used to monitor loop distance between rolls. The non-contact laser is mounted above the loop and pointed down to measure the bottom of the loop.
Mold Position Measurement
A US manufacturer of pipe fittings and couplings casts these parts in sand molds. The automated process uses several pneumatic cylinders to put the molds into a properly “stacked” position. It is imperative that these molds are properly positioned so the front and back sides are aligned.
Overhead Crane Position Measurement
Steel mills producing large coils of sheet stock store their inventory on the floors of huge warehouses. Modern factories automate the pick and place of their inventory in 3D space by equipping their overhead cranes with multiple laser distance sensors.
Steel Plate Width and Edge Control
One of Acuity’s customers is a large sheet metal fabricator and is using the AP820-1000 blue laser line sensor to control the position of the steel plate in the slitter line.
Train and Railroad Inspections
With thousands of kilometers of track to maintain and hundreds of cars, the rail industry needs high-speed measurement sensors to keep trains reliably moving.
