Laser Sensors for the Oil and Gas Industry
The Oil and Gas industries have adopted Acuity lasers for non-contact measurement applications. Applications include off-shore crane positioning, pipe length measurement, pipe diameter measurement, thread inspection and position of hydraulic lifting equipment. Acuity’s rugged, industrial long range sensors are ideal for the rigorous applications the oil and gas industry requires.

Crane Positioning
Cranes can be automated and monitored using long distance laser rangefinders, helping to improve crash avoidance, automated retrieval, and maintain equipment efficiency.
Drill Pipe Length Measurement
When drilling down for oil and gas, the drill tower and drill are attached to a piece of pipe. One customer has used the internal module of the AR2500 laser sensor to notify workers to attach the next pipe to continue to drill deeper into the ground.
Drill Pipe Runout
Measuring the runout on cylinders is a simple task using laser displacement sensors. Align the laser path with the axis of rotation and collect your data at high speeds.
LASER-BASED DEPTH MEASURING FOR DRILL RIGS
A global manufacturer of self-contained drill rigs uses the AccuRange 1000 laser distance sensor to automatically gage the depth of drilled holes. Their drill rigs are equipped with powerful down-the-hole hammers for high-capacity rock drilling in quarries, opencast mines and construction projects. The operator, sitting in a climate-controlled cabin, can know the exact hole depth on a digital console display.
Pipe Length Measurement
The dimensional measurement of pipes is crucial for manufacturing to strict tolerances. A system integrator uses a pair of AR1000 laser distance sensors to measure the differential length of hollow pipe during its production.
