AR2700 High-Speed Long Range Sensor

Acuity Laser’s ultra-compact rangefinder model. This eye-safe rangefinder has a measurement frequency of up to 40 kHz and can measure distances to natural targets up to 70 meters away or to retroreflective targets 270 meters away. This laser is best for applications that demand high sampling rates.

Fast Speed, Long Range, Compact Design

Acuity’s AR2700 high-speed long range sensor uses time-of-flight measurement principles to measure long distances at short measurement intervals to provide precise accuracy at high sampling rates.

The ultra-compact AR2700 laser sensor can measure distances from 0.2 m (8 in) to 70 m (230 ft) to natural targets of low reflectance (10%).   The accuracy is generally specified with an absolute linearity of +/- 2.36 inches (60 mm) and a repeatability of +/- 0.98 inches (25 mm). The AR2700 linearity will vary depending on sample averaging, temperature, and surface reflectivity of the target surface. The sensor has maximum sampling rate of 40,000 samples per second and measurements can be triggered using an input signal wire or a serial command at rates up to 30Khz.

For very distant measurements, you can use retroreflective target material (such as 3M Scotch lite 3000X) to increase the maximum range to 270 meters (885 feet).

Class 1, Eye-safe Laser

The AR2700 laser sensor operates with a Class 1, eye-safe, 905 nm infrared diode. The tiny laser spot has a beam divergence of 2 milliradians. The Class 1 laser is able to be used in most environments and is FAA approved to be operated in outdoor applications near airports.

Versatile, High-Speed Applications

The compact laser distance sensor is offered as a ready-to-use device with industry standard IP67 housing. Designed for measurements of moving targets, the distance sensor is commonly used to detect objects in industrial automation or for monitoring defined areas in transport and logistics applications. Typical applications for the AR2700 include bridge crane monitoring, trolley positioning and altitude measurements, amongst others. Its high sampling rate and ultra-compact case make it ideal for industrial scanning applications and OEM installations with a tight fit.

Outputs and Inputs

The AR2700 high-speed long range sensor is standard with serial and analog outputs. For serial communication, RS232 and RS422 are both included for communication with a computer or PLC. The AR2700 also comes with a standard, 4-20 mA, analog, current loop output. The AR2700 has two limit switches for indicating alarms and can be used for triggering an external device when a target reaches a set position. Data formats are available both in ASCII and Binary with selectable termination characters. This sensor can output its internal temperature and return signal amplitudes in its data stream. The sensor can also be triggered using an input signal wire or a serial command at rates up to 30Khz.

Specifications

Range: Working distance between measurement endpoints over which the sensor will reliably measure displacement.

Accuracy: The sum of all measurement errors when compared to a known standard.

Resolution: Smallest increment of change in distance that a sensor can detect.

Repeatability: Similarity between duplicate measurements.

Sample Rate: Speed that data samples are obtained from the sensor.

Options and Accessories

Acuity offers the following standard outputs for the AR2700 laser rangefinder devices:

Connection Options

Standard RS-232/RS-422 Serial Output

RS-232 and RS-422 outputs are standard on the AR2700. Cables purchased with the laser come with flying leads that can be wired directly to whatever connector your computer or PLC uses. The data from the AR2700 is output as ASCII and may be set to decimal or hexadecimal numbers.

Standard Current Loop Output

4-20 mA (can be set to 0-20mA), analog, current output is included on all AS2100 sensors. The maximum and minimum current outputs can be set to any point on the sensor’s range, even inverting direction if necessary.

CABLES

Cables sold separately from unit. Please see ordering sheet, under download tab, for more details on cable lengths. The AR2500 should be ordered with a 2m (6 ft) cable that has a Binder series 713, M12 female connector. The cable has no termination on the non-connector end so the customer must perform their own wires for connection or use an Acuity Connectivity kit for ease of use. Longer cable lengths can be ordered upon request.

REFLECTIVE TARGET SHEETING

To improve performance within 300 meters, use a retroreflective target for the highest luminance and reliable reflection. These targets will reflect the 905nm laser light directly back to the sensor. Acuity sells portions of this reflective sheeting in 2″ X 12″ (51 mm X 310 mm) pieces.

POWER AND DATA CONNECTIVITY KIT

As an option, Acuity sells a connectivity kit to aid in connecting your laser to a power supply and serial port. This product includes a 120V, 15 VDC, AC power supply; a serial cable with DB9 connector; and a solid-state, NEMA-4X interface box. The interface box includes two sets of terminal blocks for simple input (from sensor) and output (to your selected device), a DB9 male serial connector out, and a barrel style power connector in. You can either pass through the wiring to another unterminated cable, connect a DB9 serial cable directly to the interface box, or both at the same time.

Also available: A 240 V version with a European-style plug; connectivity kit with serial to USB cable.
