Sawmill measurement solutions

Laser distance sensors replace manual tape-measures

Cant board measuring systemAn Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) developed a solution for sawmills to improve measurement speed and accuracy of wood cants.

The OEM fabricated the mounting for this system, integrated the components, and commissioned the system to customer satisfaction and at 25% less than the competition.

Prior to this installation at the re-saw in this mill, the operator had to leave the control booth and go down steps to measure the board or cant with a tape measure. This could take up to two minutes. During this time the re-saw was not processing lumber.

Now all customer has to do is glance at the display to flip the cant and cut a lumber solution. Because he can flip the cant remotely, he can use one laser to measure two dimensions.

The integrator, Lexington Data, Inc., selected the AR1000 over other sensors because of the serial interface. Althought the client was not interested in that feature at the time of commissioning, he knew that it would be helpful in the future when tied into a data acquisition system. Also, they knew that if the Acuity lasers can stand up in their sawmill environment, they can surely stand up in other environments.
